The average monthly salary of big companies was 5.01 million won ($4,302) in 2018, well ahead of the 2.31 million won ($1,985) of medium and small companies.

Statistics Korea revealed this Wednesday in its latest report on the average income of salaried workers.

Under Korean law, companies with assets of 10 trillion won or more are categorized as "big companies." For-profit entities with more than 1,000 employees and 500 billion won of assets are "medium companies" and those with annual sales of 1-12 billion won are "small companies."

The big-to-small company pay gap slightly narrowed from 2017 but is still alarmingly wide.

The data also revealed the wide gender monthly pay gap ― 3.47 million won for men and 2.25 million won for women.
