The Korea Times has honored the winners of the 2021 Korea Times-ETS English Presentation Contest through a congratulatory video with award acceptance speeches recorded and sent by the recipients.

This year's contest, hosted by The Korea Times and sponsored mainly by ETS Korea, drew hundreds of entries following last year's successful inaugural event.

Applicants submitted videos skillfully crafted and edited by themselves on the two topics of "what kind of jobs do you think will be most promising in the 2030s?" and "what can be done to solve the problem of plastic waste?"

The Korea Times has hosted the annual event to help Korean students build strong and strategic narratives on important issues shared by the global community utilizing their English presentation skills ― a crucial ability that future global leaders should have.

"Some brilliant ideas on the challenging issues of this year's contest tackle the threat of plastic rubbish that is making the earth into one big trash heap." Oh Young-jin, president-publisher of The Korea Times, said during his congratulatory speech in the video. "The quality of entries submitted by hundreds of students is higher through and through, from convincing logic of argument and confidence of propagation to video filming work and proficiency in English. In all that, The Korea Times, as contest host, takes pride."

Paul Lee, the country manager of ETS Korea, also offered his congratulations to the winners.

"I'm more than excited to see how the contest has set the stage for Korean students to build awareness and perspectives on global issues," he said in a video message. "Your performance was outstanding, your English proficiency was exceptional, and your accomplishments are well deserved."

Among other sponsors of the event include Incheon Global Campus Foundation and the University of Utah Asia Campus.

A total of 24 entries received awards from six prize categories, including the ETS Grand Prize Award, Incheon Global Campus CEO Award and Chief Administrative Officer Award.

Winners of the ETS Grand Prize Award were Nam Ji-eun of Ewha Womans University in the individual category and Kim Ji-ho of Hanyang University, Kim Ji-hyeon of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in the team category for the undergraduate and graduate level.

For the middle and high school level entries, the ETS Grand Prize Award went to Nam Da-young of Daewon Foreign Language High School in the individual category, and Song Sae-rome, Yoon Da-yeong of the Korea International Christian School and Kim Ha-yeeun in the team category.

ETS Grand Prize awardee Yoon Da-young said, "We struggled with the content, filming, and processing, but through such steps, it brought us to deal with the knowledge we had never encountered with before the contest."

Nam Ji-eun of Ewha Womans University said, "Research on the massive amounts of discarded fishing gear really allowed me to have a better understanding of the magnitude of this issue. Although we still have a long way to go, I'm hoping that my presentation has brought more attention to the plastic waste problem. I appreciate The Korea Times and ETS for allowing us to have this meaningful experience and I also wish for the welfare of our environment and mankind."
